Transcona is officially home to Manitoba’s largest mural!

Back in the fall, the BIZ was invited to participate on a community committee to  help decide the winning design for a new mural to be installed on the north side of the new Club Regent Parkade on Regent Ave.  We are excited to let you know the new art has been completed, and we have just received this article from Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.  AND according the the experts at Murals of Winnipeg, this is now the largest mural in Manitoba! Hope you enjoy it and the photos that follow! Another first for Transcona.

Parkade Mural Completed at Club Regent Casino

Artist James Culleton’s mural, titled Birch Tree Forest, now graces the north side of the Club Regent Casino Parkade. Casino patrons as well as a selection committee representing Liquor & Lotteries, Transcona Biz, Transcona Trails, the city and the province participated in the selection process that chose Culleton’s vision.

“We’re thrilled to have Winnipeg artist James Culleton create his birch tree forest mural at Club Regent Casino Parkade,” says Gerry Sul, Vice President Corporate Services, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. “We’re also pleased we were able to partner with stakeholders from Transcona, the city and the province to arrive at the Culleton design which will provide a beautiful view for our Transcona neighbours.”

Work on the project began in late May with prepping and priming of the five story parkade’s north wall. The mural outline was sketched shortly after as the final painting took shape during the first three weeks in June.

“I was excited to find out I won the commission,” says James Culleton. “I’m originally from Transcona so being able to create an important piece of art here for the community meant a lot to me. We chose a design that would reflect the green, active living area being developed with the trail system in the neighbourhood. I also liked that a birch forest can be seen as a symbol of renewal and that compliments what Transcona has been going through over the past several years.”

The landscape mural turned out to be a popular choice for the varied stakeholders who supported the project and believed the end-result was well-worth the collaborative selection effort.

“We’re excited to see the landscape mural completed,” says Alexandra Morrison, Executive Director at Transcona Business Improvement Zone. “It almost makes the parking structure virtually disappear from the north view. Kudos to Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries for taking the initiative on this project. The corporation is to be commended for taking residents’ concerns into consideration. Other organizations can look to this project as an excellent example of how to brighten up their neighborhood and create a win all around.”

At about 460 feet wide by 60 feet high, the parkade art project is the largest mural in Manitoba. Residents north of the parkade, visitors and staff of Club Regent Casino, along with hikers and bikers on the Transcona Trail will be the folks who most frequently enjoy the birch forest mural.
