Henry’s Car Wash & Petro Canada, a familiar staple at the corner of Pandora Avenue and Day Street, is now home to Transcona’s latest mural. When the opportunity to host a mural was put forward to new owners, Sukhdarshn Kaila, Sukhwinder Bassi, and Jaswinder Sidhu, they wished to honour the legacy of previous owner, Henry Enns.
Painted on the east-facing wall of the building on Day Street, the artwork depicts Henry welcoming visitors outside the original car wash. Classic vehicles are shown receiving the royal treatment by devoted owners, while children and families enjoy the simple pleasure of a trip to the car wash.
Over the years Henry, his wife Erna, and their seven children developed the business, adding fuel pumps, more self-serve car washing bays, and that small-town friendly service that connects the Transcona community.
Henry enjoyed conversing with customers, making people laugh, and handing out suckers to the kids. His good nature and genuine, caring personality made him a favorite among Transcona residents, and a perfect candidate to honour.
The mural, created by artist Sarah Collard and supported by Transcona BIZ and Take Pride Winnipeg, serves as a bright and fun reminder of the importance of community, hard work, and family, which can all be found in Transcona. thanks to Sukhdarshn, Sukhwinder, and Jaswinder, these values and the tradition of a family outing to the car wash can continue for generations to come.
