The Transcona BIZ “Buy a Paver” Campaign gives community members a unique opportunity to have a small square of their history preserved in Transcona for years to come, while supporting the ongoing care of the Transcona Centennial Square at 135 Regent Avenue West. This is in the form of an engraved 8″x 8″ paving stone, installed in the ground surrounding the New Flyer Peace Fountain at the Square. The first installment of stones was showcased on August 23rd, 2014, and continues to grow every year. Honouring loved ones, celebrating a milestone, or simply recognizing life in the community have all been written in stone, and placed for everyone to enjoy.
Here are some of the stories behind the pavers:
Alan Henry Anderson Forever In Our HeartsSponsored by Kathleen Ouellette
Alan Anderson, age 22, was a resident of Transcona. His mother and grandmother are also residents of Transcona. On May 30, he was visiting some friends in the north end of Winnipeg. They went to a local store and were confronted by an armed assailant. Alan being the man that he was did everything he could to protect those in his group and in fact did protect them. None of them were hurt. Tragically protecting them cost Alan his life. Alan Anderson March 2001+May 30, 2023 Forever in our hearts.

Drew J.H Baker your smile lit the world 1999 - 2020 B5
Sponsored by April Baker.
“Your smile lit the world”. This describes Drew perfectly. After Drew passed suddenly at just 21 years old from an undetected heart condition, his smile is what people spoke most of. Drew was smiling most of the time. He was full of laughter and there was usually a hint of mischief in his eyes. Its his smile and warm nature that we want people to think of when they see his name here in the Transcona Square. On his brick is also B5. We always called ourselves the “Baker Five”. We wanted that here set in stone because the Baker Five we will always be, and we will always be a family.

In memory of Bill Dance love from your family
Sponsored by Leila and Pat Dance.
Charles (Bill) William Dance is the very definition of Transcona. As a young boy, Bill would travel to Winnipeg to visit family. They would visit his uncle, Raymond Perreault who was a fire fighter for Transcona’s division. He loved Transcona so much as a kid that when he became an adult and moved to Winnipeg, the only place he considered buying a house or even living in a community in 1973, was Transcona.
Bill and Pat married in September of 1973 and moved into the house on Lancelot, where they would go on to raise three children. Bill was a railroader by trade, though he was involved in his union as Arbitrator, Local Chairman, fighting for the rights of his fellow brothers, making sure that they kept their jobs or getting them back when unjustly fired. He was dedicated to a career and profession that in the 70’s help support most Transcona families – the Canadian National Railroad.
His three children went through the Transcona school division, and their community club was Oxford Heights. The kids were always in one sport or another, and Bill was there whenever he was home. His job didn’t allow him to be at every game but when he was, he assisted the coach or helped when and wherever he could. Bill played hockey in a men’s league out of East End Community Club. He knew how important community clubs were and all that they offered to the kids and their sports or a safe place to be.
Bill always helped during election time. He helped on many a campaign, whether it was community, city, provincial or federal. Many times, during his career, he would call upon his MP or City Councillor for help to fight “the battle”, and in return he would support and give his time to their campaign. He even got his family involved when pamphlets were needed to be delivered door to door. He enjoyed it whenever he was involved.
In the days following his passing the Honourable Bill Blaikie, Elmwood—Transcona, NDP spoke at the House of Commence in honour of Bill, marking the occasion with these fine words and a moment of silent:
“Mr. Speaker, last week was a sad week for Transcona and the larger community of railroaders in Winnipeg and across Canada. Hundreds of people gathered last Friday to mourn the sudden passing and to celebrate the life of Bill Dance, who died one day after his 55th birthday and only a short time before he was to receive his first pension cheque, after 39 years of service as a conductor.
Bill was the treasurer of UTU Local 1874 for 30 years, served on numerous committees and, as the auditor for Canada of the UTU for CN and CP, was very helpful to many locals across the country. He was a great friend and supporter of the cause of working people, and I personally will cherish many fond memories of working with him on issues of mutual concern and in various election campaigns.
To his fellow railroaders, to his wife Pat and his children, Leila, Twila and Corey, and particularly to his grandson, Braeden, who was with him when this tragedy occurred, I offer the hope that the memory of a good and faithful life that many will always be grateful for will be of comfort in the days and years ahead.”
Bill passed away April 5, 2008, at the age of 55. He was going to retired at the end of April. He lived in Transcona for 35 years, loving every day that he did. The pride and love for the community was passed on to his children that still live in Transcona, and they are raising their children here.

If Melannie or Megan would have been a boy, they would have been named Joel. Our first three kids were named Michael after many of my friends, Melannie after my mom, and Megan after my wife’s grandmother. But by the time Matthew came around the first three kids were horrified that we would consider naming him Joel or anything that didn’t start with an M. So, we kept it going.

Stella Mazur To Commemorate 100th Birthday March 19, 2022
Sponsored by Myron Mazur.
Stella Mazur, a longtime resident of Transcona celebrated her 100th birthday on March 19, 2022. To commemorate this occasion the family purchased a paver stone to be placed in the Transcona Centennial Square. Stella was raised in North Transcona along with two sisters and a brother.
As a teenager, Stella remembers working in the farmers’ fields. She completed her grade 12 education in Transcona. She was also active in curling, bowling, and singing in the church choir at St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Stella was married to Peter Mazur for 67 years until his passing in 2015. Peter was employed at the CN Transcona shops for 36 years. Stella worked at The Bay for many years, her favorite times spent working in the Paddlewheel Restaurant. Stella still found time to raise their five children. Four of the children still reside in Transcona.
Peter and Stella first resided in a home next to a service station in the 100 block of Melrose West. The family then moved to a new home that was constructed with the help of relatives in the 300 block of Rosseau West. Subsequently the family moved across the back lane to the 300 block of Ravelston West and then to the 200 Block of Ravelston West. Over the course of 60 years, the family only moved the distance of one block.
In Stella’s retirement years she enjoyed entertaining her family and particularly her five grandchildren. She also participated in the senior’s club that met at St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Church and participated in making perogies to sell at the church. She also enjoyed casino trips to the US until she was no longer able to travel.
Stella currently resides at the River East Personal Care Home where she has established several new friends that have become her family. Congratulations Mom!

I decided to purchase this paver to support our local community but also as a memory for my brother and I to share. He moved to Vancouver in March of 2018 to pursue his education and career as a Dental Hygienist. He’s currently working full time out of a clinic in Surrey, BC but I wanted to remind him that there’s always a place for him back home here in Winnipeg.

Our parents were Transcona people. Carol and I were born and raised in Transcona.
I was 17 and she was 15 when we met at Central School on Day Street. We were childhood sweethearts. Carol and I were married for 50 years. We loved each other until her untimely and unexpected passing from Cancer in 2016. During that time we traveled to over 70 countries on five Continents. Carol was truly The Wind Beneath My Wings. She was, and always will be my hero, and the Love of my Life.

The Torchia paver for Gabriel, Mary, Joseph and Dominic is to honour my family. My Uncle, Joseph, and father Dominic passed away in their early 30’s. My father died two months before I was born so I have never met him. Yohan (Phil) Grift and Mary Grift (De Baets)
Sponsored by Laura Stewart.
Mary Grift (De Baets) and Philip (Yohan) Grift bought the farm from my great grandparents; Augusta and Theophiel De Baets in 1947; who in turn had purchased it from the Jesuits of St. Boniface College Farm on October 15, 1945. The home was large enough to house the two families since 1947. They had seven children, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Mary and Philip dairy and grain farmed until 1972 when the farm was eventually sold. The farm area is now known as Mission Gardens. Forever missed and loved from the Grift, Stewart and Lippens family.
