2017 Transcona Cleanup Happens Today!
Today, May 5, 2017, over 3500 Transcona students and volunteers will swarm the neighbourhood in the 3rd annual Transcona Community Spring Cleanup.
The largest community cleanup in Winnipeg, covering the entire Transcona Ward, from Lagimodiere Blvd. to the Perimeter Highway and from Dugald Rd. to Gunn Rd. the day-long operation tackles litter, trash and other debris left behind during the winter. With fourteen Transcona Schools and nine community organization fielding cleanup teams, this year’s event is a massive undertaking that truly demonstrates Transcona’s pride in its community the dedication of the Transcona BIZ and corporate sponsors.
The volunteer teams will work in specific areas hardest hit by litter, with supplies and event tee shirts provided by the Transcona BIZ, and business sponsors.
“Not only is this a great community-building event” says Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt, “we have made great progress in keeping our community clean.”
Alex Morrison, Executive Director of the BIZ says “No community takes up a challenge better than Transcona. In these last 2 years, cleanups have definitely paid off. With all the students and volunteer groups, plus our corporate sponsors, we have a tremendous program.”
The budget of over $20,000 to purchase 3500 T-shirts, buy supplies, advertise, and help community groups with honourariums, was all raised thanks to our corporate sponsors.
To celebrate the day’s work the BIZ will be providing a BBQ and celebration at Transcona Centennial Square for all participants and sponsors. The BIZ will collect and count the bags of trash before disposing of them.
